All PirTano Construction employees are committed to its Safety Program. New employees must read the PirTano Safety Rules and sign off that they agree to abide by them. We work in a very dangerous industry. Safety education and implementation are the keys to all of our employees returning home safely each night from a days work. PirTano Construction Co., Inc. is dedicated to that goal.
PirTano holds in-house classes for its multiple divisions during the course of the year. "Tool Box Talks" are used to discuss safety topics with our crews on a bi-monthly basis. The Safety Committee meets to discuss any issues, problems and/or new topics to spread the word of Safety.

Our drivers must comply with the standards as mandated by the Department of Transportation. They receive drug and alcohol training and are pooled in a random drug and alcohol testing program. Our fleet of trucks and equipment are checked daily for optimum safety. Our drivers complete a "Vehicle Inspection Report" every day before they leave the yard. This report shows the operating condition of our vehicles. If a vehicle needs attention, this report is sent to our mechanics. Our mechanics make the necessary repairs to the vehicles using these reports, along with the regular maintenance schedule. Records are maintained on a daily basis for both the safety of our equipment and the safety of our drivers.
OSPP
PirTano Construction is a member of UCA's ground-breaking partnership, OSHA Strategic Partnership Program (OSPP). This agreement joins OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and the Underground Contractor's Association to educate, mentor and understand the OSHA laws and regulations. The OSPP has been in existence since November of 2003 when then UCA president, Mike Piraino signed the OSPP Agreement with UCA Director Larry Keefe, Sr. (Larry was the architect of the OSPP Agreement). The OSHA representatives signing the agreement were Diane Turek, Area Director, Des Plaines, Charles Shields, Area Director, Aurora and James Dillard, Compliance Assistance Specialist. The OSPP has grown each year since that time. Today there are 20 members.
Under the agreement, contractors and OSHA meet quarterly to discuss a myriad of topics and to apprise UCA contractors of the ever-changing and evolving world of safety. Contractor representatives have an opportunity to question, discuss and explain their viewpoint on any OSHA position. Open dialogue with OSHA, in a spirit of cooperation from all sides, assures a more positive direction in reducing injuries and saving lives.
OSPP SITE INSPECTION
The following is an OSPP Site Inspection report filed by Dave Soderman of Safety Alliance, Ltd. Dave is UCA's consultant and handles all the OSPP partners' audits. Per the OSPP Agreement, each contractor signatory to this partnership shall submit multiple job sites for a site inspection to insure the signatory contractors are compliant to the agreement.
On November 5, 2008, PirTano received a 100 point rating on a 100 point system. Click here to download the Site Inspection Report and view the action photos taken during the OSPP Site Inspection below.
